Post-summer holiday thoughts and an Aha-moment on Kaato!
Janne Kari
What is Kaato about? I got an aha moment last week.
Some background:
In July, more or less everyone in Finland goes on holiday and it gets very quiet. So the media has to find news topics and as we are a quite stable country, it is not easy.
Even the nature offers us only very few dangers: instead of killer sharks, we have “killer pikes”. What happens is that occasionally, a kid gets bitten and images of the small harmless wounds get then a lot of media attention. What a boring country we are.
This summer however, there was a quite colorful discussion on reading: a famous person declared that reading is a thing of the past which caused quite big counterreaction and debate.
Well, I belong to a reading club and we had a meeting last week. I discussed this topic with one of the club members (a quite well-known ex-Nokia person, btw). He told a nice story: The person who initiated the debate on reading is a very busy person, so he never answers his mobile phone.
His voice mail message says “I am not available, but if you know the Meaning of Life, please leave me a message.” My reading club friend continued: “This challenge can actually be expressed shortly, quite well within a voice mail message. The Meaning of Life is simply about doing good things to people. This becomes evident in the works of Leo Tolstoy, especially in Anna Karenina and War and Peace.”
I liked this a lot, but of course one has to ask what is “doing good things to people” about?
I suppose when younger, it was very much about working. Then also, raising up family. Socialising and helping friends.
And at experienced phase, it is often about helping companies and causes. Sharing one’s wisdom – and renewing oneself.
Of course we have multiple channels for this, but Kaato is about very much about this!
We in Kaato help others in learning new things by sharing our thinking and getting introductions to some smart people.
I have been often wondering why is it that I like so much what I see happening in Kaato and this gentleman summarised this quite nicely.
Of course making this happen will take some concrete actions. So the heads-up: There is an exciting event in Helsinki being planned, date being September 3rd. Other locations being planned are Singapore, Germany, UK and USA.
Kaatoes will have the inside track to a lot of what is ongoing in Finland and globally.
Stay tuned – and let us hear of your interests!
